There are several officially licensed Boston Cab dispatch associations but one of them has been known for some time as “Boston Cab“. The current reported owner of Boston Cab even went so far as to take out a  state of Massachusetts service mark on the similar name Boston Taxi.  I am told by my expert legal team (guy I met driving a Boston Cab) here at Bostoncab.org that the possibility of a court enforcing a prohibition on use of either name in Massachusetts was slim to none since the landmark Duck Tours vs. Super Duck tours case.

The skinny on Boston Cab dispatch.

Most people do not understand that most of the Boston Cab companies do not actually own Boston Cabs. Even in the rare case that they do like Boston Cab dispatch association there are several separate corporations with almost every Boston Cab being registered to a separate corporation. Each individual Boston Cab medallion owner by law must belong to an official dispatch company. Basically a Boston Cab company is the same business model as say an internet service provider. They all offer the same product with differing levels of service. The current owner of the dispatch Edward J. Tutunjian. It is widely rumored Mr. Tutunjian an ethnic Armenian was born in Syria and at some point emigrated to the United States penniless and built up his vast fortune that is now rumored to consist of 300+ Boston Cab medallions (valued at 530k + each)  the Boston Cab dispatch association and several million dollars of real estate in Massachusetts and around the world. I am told they even have a company that manufactures wine in Argentina? I have no way to know if any of this is true or not since someone in  Mr. Tutunjian’s level is inaccessible to a lowly shift driver like myself.  Mr. Tutunjian is alleged to have acquired the Boston Cab dispatch association from the Barenholtz family in the mid 1980′s. It is alleged that at some point realizing  more than 50% of the Boston Cabs in the association were his he went to the Barenholtz family and offered to buy the association from them with the caveat that if they did not sell for his offered price he would simply go on his own and open another association.  Again I have no way of verifying this story. I am sure if there is any truth to it at all it is heavily swayed by the envy and contempt most poor Americans feel for an immigrant who made millions.

Brett Barenholtz owner/manager Boston Cab

Whatever the case the nephew of the original owners Brett Barenholtz is still the manager and alleged part owner of the Boston Cab dispatch association and is also reported to own several dozen Boston cabs. I can tell you more about Mr. Barenholtz later. I have a funny story about meeting him on the side of a road in Wellesley 2 years before I even knew he was the manager/owner of  Boston Cab.
